Each band is a species — a cluster of genetically similar creatures — and its thickness is that species' share of the pond, not its headcount: every column is exactly full, so a band can widen while the population falls. Watch lineages appear, sweep to dominance, and go extinct. Click one to spotlight it in the pond above. The plot always spans the whole run: as the run grows it gets coarser, never shorter.
